Arkansas Counties


Arkansas, which became the 25th state in 1836, was home to hundreds of thousands of residents throughout the 19th century.


Ashley County was formed in 1848 and was organized from Chicot, Union, and Drew Counties.

Baxter County was formed in 1873 and was organized from Fulton, Izard, Marion, and Searcy Counties.

Benton County was created in 1836 from Washington County.

Carroll County was formed in 1833 and was organized from Izard County.

Clark County was formed in 1818 from Arkansas County.

Clay County was formed in 1873 from Randolph and Greene Counties.

Cleveland County was originally named Dorsey County in 1873, but the name was changed to Cleveland in 1885. Cleveland was reorganized from the four neighboring counties of Bradley, Dallas, Jefferson, and Lincoln.

Conway County was formed in 1825 from Pulaski County.

Craighead County was created in 1859 from Mississippi, Greene, and Poinsett counties. The county seat is Jonesboro.

Crawford County lies on the Arkansas River, on the westernmost border of Arkansas. It was created in 1820 from Pulaski County. The county seat is Van Buren.


Cross County was formed in 1862 from Crittenden, Poinsett and St. Francis counties.

Dallas County was formed in 1845 and was organized from Clark & Bradley Counties.

Fulton County was formed in 1842 and was organized from Izard County.

Garland County was formed in 1873 and was organized from Fulton, Izard, Marion, and Searcy Counties.

Grant County was formed in 1869 from Jefferson, Hot Springs and Saline Counties.

Hempstead County records span from 1851 to 1900. The county is located along the Little River in southwestern Arkansas, near the border with Texas. Hope is the county seat.


Hot Spring County was formed in 1829 and was organized from Clark County.

Howard County was formed in 1873 and was organized from Pike, Hempstead, Polk, and Sevier Counties.

Independence County was formed in 1820 from Arkansas and Lawrence counties.

Johnson County was formed in 1833 from Pope County.

Lafayette County was formed in 1827 from Hempstead County.

Lonoke County was formed in 1873 and was organized from Pulaski and Prairie Counties.

Lawrence County was formed in 1815 from New Madrid, Missouri County.

Logan County was formed in 1875 from Franklin, Scott, Yell, and Johnson Counties.

Marion County was formed in 1835 from Izard County.

Montgomery County was formed in 1842 from Hot Spring County.

Nevada County was created in 1871 from parts of Hempstead, Columbia, and Ouachita Counties.

Phillips County was formed in 1820 from Arkansas County.

Pike County records span from 1875 to 1900.  The county is located in southwestern Arkansas. Murfreesboro is the county seat.


Polk County was formed in 1844 from Sevier County.

Prairie County was formed in 1846 and was organized from Pulaski County.

Randolph County was created in 1835 from Lawrence County.

Sebastian County was created in 1851 from parts of Scott, Polk, and Crawford Counties.

Scott County was formed in 1883 and was organized from Crawford and Pope Counties.

Sharp County was formed in 1868 from Lawrence County.

St. Francis County was formed in 1827 and was organized from Philips County.

Stone County was formed in 1873 from Izard, Independence, Searcy, and Van Buren Counties.

Union County was formed in 1829 from Hempstead and Clark Counties.

Washington County is located in northwestern Arkansas, on the border with Oklahoma. Fayetteville is the county seat.

White County was formed in 1835, and the county seat is Searcy.

Yell County is located along the Arkansas River in the western part of the state. It was created in 1840 from neighboring Pope and Scott Counties. Danville and Dardanelle are the county seats.
